February 9th is National Toothache Day.

It’s not a celebration of toothaches, but a gentle reminder of the importance of dental hygiene. Probably an unnecessary reminder if you happen to be suffering from a toothache!

What causes toothaches?

There are many possible causes of tooth pain. Sharp pains are usually created when the pulp, the innermost layer of the tooth where the nerves are, is exposed. This can be due to a cavity, worn enamel, or even a chipped or cracked tooth. Dull throbbing pain is more often due to an infection. In either case, if you have a toothache you should seek advice or treatment from your dentist.1, 2
