Natural Ingredient Alternatives for Personal Care Products: Part 1

 November 13, 2019

Consumers today are shopping online and scanning store shelves for beauty products that feature natural ingredient alternatives. They want the same effectiveness of traditional synthetics, only without the potentially dangerous health risks. Buyers have learned how to identify these harmful ingredients and view safe, clean beauty products as a need, not a luxury.

So, it’s up to you, the beauty brand, to zero in on the safest ingredient alternatives for your products.

4 Toxic Ingredients Consumers are Avoiding and Their Natural Alternatives

In this series, we’ve put together a list of twelve common, yet potentially harmful ingredients, that consumers are starting to avoid: The Dirty Dozen. Replace these black list synthetics with the suggested natural ingredient alternatives in your formulations instead.

1. Dimethicone

The pore blocking ingredient, dimethicone, often leads to skin irritation and acne. The silicone-based polymer is found in products such as facial moisturizers, sunscreens, hair care, cosmetics and much more. It can also be identified by the name methicone.

Natural Ingredient Alternatives

Natural occlusive ingredients, such as cocoa seed, mango and shea butters all offer similar skin smoothing effects, without irritating the skin. Cocoa, for example, lubricates the skin to help it retain its natural elasticity and moisture.

2. Diethanolamine (DEA), monoethanolamine (MEA), and triethanolamine (TEA)

Common ethanolamines, DEA, TEA and MEA, have been shown to cause skin irritation, inflammation and other harmful effects on the body. These ingredients can be found in almost any cosmetic and personal care products.

Natural Ingredient Alternatives

Natural emulsifiers, such as beeswax and lecithin from plant sources, can be used as an alternative to common ethanolamines.

3. Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and is actually restricted in Canada, Japan, European Union and Sweden. It can be found in deodorant, body wash, shampoo and much more.

Natural Ingredient Alternatives

Consumers are seeking products made with natural preservatives to avoid formaldehyde. Grapefruit seed extract, vitamin E and antioxidants, such as Dermofeel AP MB, are on their safe list.

4.  1,4 Dioxane

Determined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to be a likely human carcinogen, 1,4 dioxane is a suspected toxicant to many of the body’s organs. It is often used in personal care items such as shampoo, face cleansers, baby bath, soap and body wash.

Natural Ingredient Alternatives

Since organic standards prohibit the process of ethoxylation, organic cosmetic and personal care products are free from 1,4 dioxane. Alternatives include natural foaming agents such as Emulpharma® ECO10 from Res Pharma. This Palm-oil free, natural, non-ionic emulsifier offers foam-boosting effects, ideal for low viscosity formulations.

Stay tuned for part two and three where we will cover eight more potentially harmful ingredients and their natural alternatives.
